Can I convert a cable stearing outboard engine to use on a pontoon boat?

I have an 1970's merc (black magic I think its called) 40 or 50HP that is currently on an older runabout that has the cable stearing. I was given a old 16ft pontoon boat. Can I use this motor on the pontoon? The pontoon stearing has the plug in to the motor stearing pieces.|||Yes.

If it is a 70's era Merc (Black painted) it has "tilt-tube" steering mount.

The large teleflex cable will go through the hollow tube that the motor pivots on.

You MUST have the correct steering link connector. These are not universal, they are specific to the engine. Also do not substitute any of the bolts or nuts that mount the steering link, they are specially made to not loosen up, but also not bind. Consult a Mercury dealer, or any boat shop familiar with push/pull steering commonly called out by Teleflex, but also there are other makers as well.

I can't under emphasize this. You MUST have the correct link arm kit for the motor, and it is specific to the family of motor as well. Safety requires this. This kit is expensive but it is VITAL--- a life and death issue so don't scrimp on the link, and do not try to get by with wrong one - made for a different motor family.
